Comix

Call opens April 1, 2019        Call closes May 31, 2019

This fall, Valley Art Center presents an exhibit focusing on comics (Ka-PLOW!). In conjunction with Cleveland-area comic artists Gary and Laura Dumm, this exhibit will combine educational material with original pieces by local, regional, and national comic artists (ZING!), as well as students from local schools and colleges.
Gary and Laura Dumm are Cleveland-based artists. Gary is a comic book artist (BLAM!) known particularly for his work illustrating the comics of Harvey Pekar. Mr. Dumm’s work has appeared in many other comics, and in several full-length graphic novels, and has had his editorial cartoons published locally in Cleveland Scene, Cleveland Free Times, and The Plain Dealer. Laura is first and foremost a painter, known for her bright color palette (ZAP!), and has exhibited several solo shows and public art projects throughout the Cleveland area. They have worked as a team on many projects, from painting series to comic projects, with Laura providing digital color work to Gary’s black and white art.

This exhibit (POW!) will feature an open entry segment to be juried by the Dumm’s, as well as pieces by select artists curated by the Dumm’s to spotlight specific moments or movements in comic history with a focus on Ohio’s contributions to this fascinating medium.

This exhibit will be on display September 13 through October 16, 2019, with (THWIP!) an opening reception September 13 from 6-8 p.m.

Entry Fee: $10, up to four (4) pieces per artist
